2016 Moonga Stakes Field and Barrier Draw

October 12th, 2016

A talented and capacity field has been confirmed for Saturday’s 2016 Group 3 Ladbrokes Moonga Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield Racecourse; highlighted by the inclusion of some of the Spring Carnival’s standout horses.

Voodoo Lad has returned to racing in particularly slick form this time and should prove tough to beat in the Ladbrokes Moonga Stakes from barrier 9 and with only 56.5kgs in tow.

Yet to finish outside the first three through sixteen career starts, Voodoo Lad returned to winning form with a smart performance for success in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) on August 13th.

Repeating the dose in the Listed Fruit Supply Stakes (1200m) on September 3rd, the I Am Invincible gelding mustered a strong late performance to finish second in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) three weeks ago.

Queensland raider Hopfgarten has returned to racing in smart form this time and should find a good position off pace in the Moonga Stakes from barrier 10, with Craig Williams in the saddle.

Winner of the Listed Sunshine Coast Ascot Handicap (1200m) and Listed Wayne Wilson Mile (1600m) most notably in winter, the Mossman gelding resumed for fourth in the Listed Paris Lane Handicap (1400m) a fortnight ago and will relish a second tilt at 1400m on Saturday.

Takedown has returned to racing in career-best form this season, and could very well receive the run of the race in the Moonga Stakes from barrier 5.

Savaging the line for third in the Group 2 Arrowfield Sprint (1200m) on Day 2 of The Championships, Takedown charged home to win the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) before placing second in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) most notably in winter.

Resuming this time for an impressive win in the Group 2 The Shorts (1200m), the son of Stratum again beat a talented field in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) a fortnight ago.

Takedown will likely relish a step up to 1400m, but he may require his run in the Ladbrokes Moonga Stakes to adjust to the Victorian way of going.
