The 2010 Moonga Stakes field has been decided. Known this year as the Betfair Stakes, the Group 3 Moonga Stakes is a 1400 metre middle distance run that will be held as part of Caulfield Cup Day.
In the 14 horse field, it is difficult to pick a standout, but Gathering looks to be the best pick in barrier 6. While he hasn’t been on top form for a long time, his last start saw him win the Listed Superstable Stakes, and he has won places in several Group races before.
Rothera also looks like a good pick in barrier 4. Coming off a Fujitsu Handicap win, Rothera also placed a fourth by less than 3 lengths behind Metal Bender in first in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes in May. He will carry just 55.5kg, which could easily make the difference for him.
Al Dhafra is looking good to place, with a perfect barrier 1 draw and 56.5kg to carry. While his most recent run was a eighth in The Shorts, Al Dhafra has usually performed reasonably well in Group races. A win seems unlikely, but Al Dhafra does appear to like the 1400 metre distance.
